In 1939, he was appointed Vice-Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University. In 1946, he was appointed Ambassador to UNESCO. After independence, he was appointed Chairman of University Education. In 1948, he was appointed Indias ambassador to the Soviet Union. In 1952, he became the countrys Vice President. In 1954, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna. He was twice elected Vice President and President in 1962. He spent the most important 40 years of his life as a teacher. He believed that if education is imparted in the right way, many of societys ills can be eradicated. His invaluable contribution to the field of education will surely remain unforgettable. His birthday is celebrated as Teachers Day.
