During the period for which this book presents a history of short story literature, there is no systematic account of short story literature written by non-Hindi speakers and Indian expatriates. Therefore, it has not been possible to include this vast, and perhaps valuable, literature in this history. This book discusses or mentions, in more or less detail, approximately 100 short story writers and 3,000 stories from Urdu, Hindi, Maithili, Bhojpuri, and Rajasthani. An alphabetical list of short story writers and short story collections is provided in the index.
