raag-pahadi
Raag Pahadi

The setting of Raag Pahadi is Kumaon, from the mid-nineteenth century to the early twentieth century. The story begins with the image of six mysterious women dressed in red and black, circling the lake, foreshadowing a terrible misfortune. These spirits are determined to free Nainitals sacred lake from the pollution of the British. In this very Nainital, an orphaned girl named Tilottama Upreti grows up, whose uncle was hanged as a rebel in the 1857 War of Independence. The plot revolves around Tilottamas family members as well as a variety of local and foreign characters, including the American painter William Dempster, who sets out to explore India. Tilottama witnesses the changes that, sometimes quietly and sometimes dramatically, are transforming remote towns, cantonments, and settlements, including Almora, in effect, impacting the entire country. The clash of tradition and modernity, and the lives of characters affected by it, sometimes helpless and sometimes hardworking, are poignantly depicted in this novel, a tone reminiscent of the tones of Raag Pahadi. The colors of the paintings and the notes of the music create a wondrous world where it becomes impossible to distinguish between myth and legend, historical and real, and imaginary and fantasy. This is a story of eternal love, union and separation, and an indomitable will to live.
