Description

Acharya Hazari Prasad Dwivedis creative world was diverse, and his literary personality was multifaceted. He was a Sanskrit scholar, an expert in astrology, a poet, a critic, a novelist, an essayist, an editor, a translator, and countless other roles. He was both a scholar and a professor, and certainly an acharya. He was a highly regarded orator of his time. Most importantly, he was a skilled teacher and a truly inquisitive researcher. Balraj Sahni, noting his research, wrote, He was eager to investigate everything from a needle to socialism. Thats why he spoke of extracting oil from sand, if the right kind of sand was available. The greatest strength of his research and contemplation was his knowledge of multiple languages and traditions. While he embraced the knowledge traditions of Indian literature and philosophical thought, along with ancient Indian languages like Sanskrit, Pali, Prakrit, and Apabhramsha, within his cultural consciousness, he also embraced the modern knowledge traditions of modern Indian and foreign languages like Hindi, English, Bengali, and Punjabi. Such a blend of tradition and modernity is rarely seen in literary figures. Through this delightful blend of tradition and modernity, he gave Hindi literary criticism a new dimension of evaluation. The historical understanding with which Dwivedi evaluated folk and classical texts is significant because it offers no glorification or emotional eulogies, but rather a socio-cultural perspective imbued with a scientific consciousness, whose first and last focus is humanityits mortality, its existence, and its labor.
