Description
It would not be an exaggeration to call the Chapekar brothersDamodar Hari Chapekar, Balkrishna Hari Chapekar, and Vasudev Hari Chapekara trio of revolutionaries. The Chapekar brothers were residents of Chinchwad near Pune and considered Bal Gangadhar Tilak their guru. From the very beginning, they had a strong desire to free India from foreign slavery. In 1896, when a plague epidemic broke out in Pune, the government deployed an officer named Rand to control it. Rands white officers, under the guise of investigation, began harassing people from house to house. These atrocities deeply enraged the Chapekar brothers. They resolved to take revenge on Rand. One day, when Rand and his companion were returning from a festival, Balkrishna shot Rands companion, Eystr, and Damodar shot Rand, killing them both. Damodar and Balkrishna were hanged by the British government due to the backbiting of the Dravid brothers. Enraged by this, the youngest son, Vasudev Hari Chapekar, with the help of his friend Mahadev Ranade, killed the backbiting Dravid brothers and was himself hanged. The bravery displayed by the Chapekar brothers in fighting the British thus further fueled the fire of revolution against the British in the hearts of the countrymen. The inspiring life story of the Chapekar brothers, sons of Mother India.
