Description
In 1882, Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyays Bengali novel Anandamath was published. Set against the backdrop of the 18th-century Sanyasi Rebellion and the Bengal famine, it became a huge hit with readers. Fearing that it might incite patriotism and rebellion, the then-British government banned Anandamath, a ban that was lifted after Indias independence in 1947. Anandamath is considered a milestone in modern Indian literature and remains immensely popular with readers. Its translations are available in almost every Indian language. The song Vande Mataram included in it earned the honor of becoming the countrys national anthem. Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay (Chatterjee) (June 27, 1838 April 8, 1894) was a great Bengali poet and novelist. In addition to Bengali, he was a scholar of Sanskrit. He began his literary career with poetry, but is best known for his novels. Besides Anandamath, he also wrote Durgesh Nandini, Kapal Kundala, Devi Chaudharani, Mrinalini is his most famous novel. Through his writing, he sought to awaken people. His storytelling skills are rarely found in any other Indian writer.
