Description

Bal Gandharvaa shining star of Marathi music and theatre! An artist in his entirety. An actor who lived not by assuming roles but by growing from the depths of his soul. Despite being a man, his female roles inspired beauty consciousness for women in Maharashtra. His stage costumes inspired women to adjust their attire and makeup, and sparked a trend among young men to see their male bodies as feminine. This Bal Gandharva, not just an artist, was a deity to his admirers. Even at the age of sixty, people watched him with the same love and devotion as they had in their youth. This novel is the life story of Narayan Shripad Rajhans, whom Lokmanya Tilak bestowed with the title of Bal Gandharva upon hearing him sing at a very young age, and who later became known by that name. In the novel, the author has interwoven all available facts about his life with details of his art and personal life. With deep emotion, he has portrayed the inner and outer life of this icon of Indian classical theatre, in relation to the social and political context of the era, in such a way that Bal Gandharva appears before us in his full form. We are amazed by the golden years of his life, and later, when his life begins to flow on the waves of the ironies of fate, we are filled with sadness. The novel also introduces us to an era of traditional theatre that seems unimaginable to us today.
