Description
Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh (1907-1931) lived at a time when Indias freedom struggle was gaining momentum, and Mahatma Gandhis non-violent, peaceful opposition to partial independence was testing peoples patience. Bhagat Singhs call to arms inspired the youth, and the challenge and courage of Sukhdev and Rajguru, along with his comrades in the military wing of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association, galvanized them. The slogan Inquilab Zindabad! they gave became the slogan of the freedom struggle. A sham trial for Bhagat Singhs involvement in the Lahore Conspiracy Case was held, and when the British hanged him at the age of twenty-three, Indians began to revere his martyrdom for his youth, his bravery, and his indomitable courage in the face of certain death. Many years later, after independence in 1947, his writings written in prison were published. Today, it is because of these writings that Bhagat Singh stands out from the many revolutionaries who sacrificed their lives for India. Informative and engaging, this book is a fascinating account of one of Indias greatest freedom fighters and a man of remarkable intellectual honesty.
