That is why the characters of the Manas have resided in the hearts of Hindu society with complete respect for thousands of years. Among these characters, Bharat is the most charming. Singing and listening to his virtues makes one feel blessed. Indeed, Bharat is the foundation of the Ramayana. Had Ram quietly gone to the forest, the Ramayana might not have been written; history would have dismissed Rams love as a compulsion due to palace intrigues and machinations, or would have considered it the golden age of Kaikeyis cunning and ruthless politics. But the seeds of dignity in human behavior that Ram sowed with his sublime love would never have blossomed without the watering of Bharats sacrifice. Just imagine, if Bharat had ascended the throne of Ayodhya, who would have known Ram? The Ramayana would have remained a saga of struggle for royal rights, lying like garbage in some corner of history. At any cost, the Ramayana would never have become a pearl, a necklace around the neck of the people. Bharata had to choose between Rama and his kingdom, between love and position. Bharata chose Rama; he embraced love. Attaining Rama, embracing love, was extremely difficult. Bharata chose the difficult path.
