Bharat Mein Darshanshastra

This is the third book in the series Philosophy: East and West. Its author, Dr. Mrinal Kanti Gangopadhyay, is considered a distinguished scholar of Indian culture and philosophy. During the nearly 1,500-year period from the Rigvedic period to the first century AD, Indian philosophy spanned a range of philosophical streams, from theistic and utopian to materialistic ones like Lokayata. In this book, the learned author has examined all these streams and provided a realistic understanding of the nature and substance of Indian philosophy. The books introduction provides a general overview of some of the fundamental characteristics of Indian philosophy, followed by a discussion of the major schools of thoughttheir proponents and texts, along with their fundamental principles. The book also provides a detailed analysis of the arguments and debates that Indian thinkers have offered on important philosophical issues, each in their own unique way. Undoubtedly, there are numerous textbooks available on this subject, but Dr. Gangopadhyay, in order to maintain objectivity, has adopted a new method of analysis rather than treading the beaten track. He has presented Indian philosophy in such simple terms, without displaying erudition, that this book becomes useful even to the general reader, some of whom may be their first book on the subject. However, we hope that this book will also prove thought-provoking and informative for students of philosophy.
