Description

Stories of indigo factories are commonly associated with North Bihar, particularly Champaran and Tirhut. This is primarily due to the Satyagraha protests in Champaran against the exploitative practices of indigo cultivation and the extreme economic oppression faced by the indigo farmers (indigo cultivators). Therefore, indigo cultivation in North Bihar has been a subject of interest for historians and those interested in studying the exploitative nature of colonialism in India, as well as its resistance. The present book is a Hindi translation of Minden Wilsons History of Indigo Factory in Bihar. This report primarily concerns the indigo industry in North Bihar. Minden has written a detailed account of almost all the small and large indigo factories in North Bihar, including the reasons for their establishment, gradual development, and decline. He also outlines improved production methods for the indigo and sugar industries in North Bihar. Minden Wilson was a British citizen. His contributions to the management of the indigo industry in the latter half of the nineteenth century are considered significant. He held a prominent position among the wealthy indigo producers of colonial India. Minden Wilson spent his early life in Mauritius, where he worked in the sugarcane industry before moving to India. In search of a better life, Minden decided to move to India, where his elder brother was already involved in the indigo industry. In 1847, he arrived in Calcutta, part of the British Empire, aboard the American ship Albatross. From there, he moved to the indigo-growing region of Bihar. He subsequently worked as an assistant manager and manager in several indigo factories in Bihar. He had extensive experience in the indigo industry.
