Pran Kumar Sharma, popularly known as Pran, was a renowned Indian cartoonist. He was born on August 15, 1938, in Kasur, a small town in Punjab, now in Pakistan, and died on August 6, 2014.Pran is best known for creating the iconic Indian comic book character Chacha Chaudhary. A middle-aged man with a red turban and white moustache, he was known for his wit, intelligence, and problem-solving abilities. He quickly became a household name. Chacha Chaudharys popularity led to his publications in several Indian languages.Pran began his career as a cartoonist in the 1960s. Initially, he worked for Milap, a Delhi newspaper. Later, he worked for several major publications, including Blitz and the Indian Express. In 1971, he launched his own comic book series, featuring characters such as Shrimatiji, Billu, and Pinky. Gradually, the names of these characters became familiar to every child and adult in India.In 1999, Pran was awarded Indias highest civilian award, the Padma Shri, for his contribution to popularizing comics in the country. He was the first Indian cartoonist to receive this honor.Prans legacy as a cartoonist and comic book creator lives on through his characters and countless readers. People still enjoy reading his comics. Theres no doubt that his significant work and contributions have had a profound impact on Indian culture. Pran will always be remembered as one of the most beloved cartoonists in Indian history.
