A pesar de que el candombe es sin duda la manifestacion cultural mas destacada de origen negro africano del Rio de la Plata y aun mantiene una gran vigencia en el Uruguay, ha sido hasta ahora poco estudiado, por lo que este libro de Ruben Carambula - quien ha consagrado su vida al tema - viene a llenar un sensible vacio. El papel decisivo en la gestacion del candombe correspondio a los congos, pero pronto las otras naciones se fueron sumando al ritual, de esa manera el vocablo se generalizo hasta englobar a casi todas las danzas de los negros, incluso las carnavalescas. Tras analizar su proceso historico y las formas organizativas que aseguraron su permanencia, Carambula se detiene en los personajes del candombe y su indumentaria, asi como el los instrumentos musicales que intervienen. Donde mas minucioso se muestra es en la descripcion de su coreografia, a fin de facilitar a los docentes un material util. Y ya que la principal forma expresiva del autor pasa por la musica y la poesia, se permite incluir algunas partituras y una seleccion de sus poemas negristas como un modo de recrear ese triste via crucis que comenzaba al otro lado del mar. Se cierra esta obra con un amplio vocabulario y un apendice que reune un conjunto de ensayos complementarios.
