Chak Piran Ka Jassa

This monumental novel by renowned Hindi short story writer Balwant Singh tells the story of Punjab several years before Partition. The author has demonstrated a keen eye for detail in his selection of characters, choosing them only from areas of life within his immediate experience. Through his predominantly Jat characters, he presents a vivid picture of contemporary life in Punjab. As the novels narrative progresses, the uncle and nephews problems become increasingly complex. They are neither free from hatred nor ready to accept their separation. Ultimately, Jassa Singh finds a solution to the conflict of conflicting emotions and achieves the dignity of a protagonist. The subtle psychoanalysis of various situations and the novels vibrant characters are difficult to forget, even with effort. Indeed, Chak Peeran Ka Jassa is an impressive novel written in a powerful language.
