Description
Colonialism heavily encouraged a particular type of writing for its expansion. This is a well-accepted fact. But there is another aspect to this. Studies of the body of knowledge produced by Fort William College and other contemporary institutions confirm that the specter of Orientalism has become so deeply ingrained in the minds of scholars that dialectical vision has vanished from their intellectual psyche. Limiting all colonial writing to this kind of confinements and viewing it through a single lens makes it difficult to uncover the actual material conditions and their impacts. It is true that colonial power adapted knowledge to its advantage, but we must not forget that, no matter how much adaptation there may be, the role of knowledge in dialectical situations also has other dimensions. We can recognize these dimensions only if we keep an eye on other influential factors present at the time. It is a historical responsibility to argue for the British governments economic exploitation of India and its interference in modernity. However, if we have forgotten the hidden truths in this process, they must also be rediscovered. The consciousness of knowledge must oppose injustice and expose any kind of hypocrisy. Therefore, this book, by reanalyzing the Companys policies and highlighting the subtle nuances in its relationship with the College, has exposed the nuances of the relationship between power and knowledge. By highlighting the differences in their language policies, the linearity of our vision has been revealed. Simultaneously, by reanalyzing the developmental tradition of Hindi language and literature and the Hindi-Urdu relationship, new windows have been opened.
