Description

There have been very few politicians in India who consistently conveyed their views to their contemporaries and readers in written form, thus not only clarifying their position but also educating the public. Chandrashekhar is a pioneer among them. He edited and published the Young Indian for a long time, writing without prejudice or self-interest on every event affecting the country, politics, and society. This is a collection of his editorials for the weekly Young Indian. This volume includes editorials written over a period of three decades, from 1971 to 2001. Needless to say, this entire period was a time of major events and changes in Indian politics. This period witnessed the Indo-Pak war and the subsequent rise of Bangladesh. Indira Gandhis Garibi Hatao movement was launched during this period; her victory in the 1971 Lok Sabha elections, the subsequent Janata Party government, its dissolution, and Indira Gandhis return to power occurred during this period. The issues and events on which you will read the views of politician and thinker Chandrashekhar include, in addition to the above, the Emergency, Indira Gandhis assassination, Rajiv Gandhis subsequent rise to Prime Minister, his removal from power after the Bofors scandal and the subsequent rise of V.P. Singh, Chandrashekhars own short-lived Prime Ministership, the Rajiv assassination, and the early days of the Narasimha Rao administration. As a leader and political thinker, Chandrashekhar is known for his independent thinking. He observed this entire period objectively, consistently expressing his thoughts and desires for the nations welfare in his editorials. Reading these editorials is not only about Chandrashekhars thoughts, but also about the history of that era.
