Verrier Elwin was a young Englishman who came to India as a missionary and later became an important Indian anthropologist. Inspired by Gandhiji and guided by Jamnalal Bajaj, Verrier Elwin decided to settle in Karanjia, a Gond village in the Maikal Hills, and dedicated himself to the welfare of the people of that region. Life in a Gond Village is a diary of his time in Karanjia from 1932 to 1936, where he lived like the Gond people in a hut built by himself and a few friends. This lively, poignant, and anecdotal book, Elwin combines his anthropological powers of observation with his natural sense of humor to masterfully depict the multifaceted nature of Gond life and the inner realization of the ashram, which included Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Gonds, and so on.
