Description

The need for studies on the role of religion in the construction and reconstruction of gendered citizens is not only due to the recognition that religion is a powerful institution deeply embedded in the structural framework of our everyday lives, but also because, in the current political context, it plays a significant role in mobilizing and strengthening our identities. This collection is divided into two parts. The first part comprises ten articles from India, Pakistan, and China. These articles are divided into three themes. Three articles in the first theme theoretically discuss the interplay between caste and religion and its gendered consequences. The second theme includes articles that discuss the internalization of the superiority of institutional norms and rules that construct gender in different ways. The third category includes articles that directly relate to the womens movement or where there is a feminist engagement with religion. This interrelationship finds expression in identity discourse, radical collectivism, or religio-political movements. The second part of the collection includes selected excerpts from two popular Hindi and Urdu texts (Bahishti Jewellery and Nari Shiksha) that religiously guide womens conduct. These didactic texts reinforce gendered traditions regarding the conduct and behavior of Hindu and Muslim women. It is hoped that with the support of readers, this initiative will reach a successful conclusion.
