Description

Mrs. Sudha Murthy is a popular and respected Kannada writer. Her first novel, Mahashweta, published in Hindi, proved quite popular. It is hoped that her second novel, Dollar Bahu, will also become a Hindi favorite. Shamanna ji is a teacher from a humble background. Gauramma is his devout wife. They have two sons, Chandrashekhar and Girish, and a daughter, Surabhi. Chandrashekhar fell in love with Vinuta, but she had to move to America. Meanwhile, Vinuta marries her younger brother, Girish. Chandrashekhar marries Jamuna, the daughter of a wealthy family. They both live in America. Jamuna was in love with Dollar. Gauramma, too, loved Jamuna more than the virtuous Vinuta, because of Dollar. Gauramma then moves to America to join her son and daughter-in-law. After staying there for a long time, Gowramma grows to hate her dollar-loving daughter-in-law and her love for dollars, and returns to India. Now she wants to prioritize Vinuta, but Girish and Vinuta have both left home and are living in different cities. Thus, the saying I got Maya, nor Ram comes true for Gowramma. Returning to India, Gowramma says, I want neither heaven nor happiness! Our homeland is beautiful; our village is nice! I am haunted by the memories of Vinuta. This novel reawakens the Indian identity and self-respect. Disillusionment with the glitz of America and the dollar is the central theme of this novel. The poignancy of characterization and the elegance of craft are additional highlights of this novel.
