Description

Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar is seen as the messiah of Dalits in India. In 1947, he was appointed chairman of the Drafting Committee, formed by the Constituent Assembly to draft the Constitution for independent India. He played a significant role in the creation of the Constitution. He was born on April 14, 1891, in Mhow (near Indore), a small town in present-day Madhya Pradesh. He was the fourteenth child of his father, Subedar Ramji, and his mother, Bhimabai Shakpal. Being of the Mahar caste, he was considered untouchable. His father and grandfather had served in the British Army. The then government arranged for good schools for the children of all military personnel. Therefore, despite his low caste, he received a good education. In 1937, Dr. Ambedkar introduced a bill to abolish the Khoti system, a system in which Mahars in the Konkan region worked as government slaves. Upon Indias independence in 1947, he held the position of Law Minister. He proclaimed, Snatched rights are not obtained by begging; rights must be recovered. For his remarkable work, he was posthumously awarded Indias highest civilian honor, the Bharat Ratna, in 1990.Presented here is an inspiring and readable biography of a true messiah who uplifted the poor, the helpless, and the oppressed.
