Description

Dr. Radhakrishnan was born into a poor Brahmin family on September 5, 1888, in Tiruttani, Madras (now Chennai). Due to family poverty, Radhakrishnans entire education was based on scholarships. Philosophy was his favorite subject, and he earned his BA and MA in this subject. After completing his MA in 1909, Radhakrishnan became an assistant lecturer at Madras Presidency College. He was proficient in Hindu scriptures such as the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita, and the Brahma Sutras. His commentaries on Shankara, Ramanuja, and Madhava were compelling. He studied Buddhist and Jain philosophy extensively, as well as Western thinkers such as Plato, Plotinus, Kant, Bradley, and Bergson. In 1931, he was appointed Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University. In 1939, he was appointed Vice-Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University. In 1946, he was appointed Ambassador to UNESCO. After independence, he was appointed Chairman of University Education. In 1948, he was appointed Indias ambassador to the Soviet Union. In 1952, he became the countrys Vice President. In 1954, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna. He was twice elected Vice President and President in 1962. He spent the most important 40 years of his life as a teacher. He believed that if education is imparted in the right way, many of societys ills can be eradicated. His invaluable contribution to the field of education will surely remain unforgettable. His birthday is celebrated as Teachers Day. Presented here is a readable and inspiring biography of a philosopher of high caliber and a unique social reformer who provided proper guidance to society.
