Jurez Saramagu is considered one of the most important international writers of the last hundred years. He was born on November 16, 1922, in Portugal. He gained particular fame as a writer in his sixties with the publication of the books Baltasar and Blimunda. His other major books include Manual of Painting and Calligraphy, The Gospel According to Jesus Christ, All the Names, Death with Interruptions, The Cave, The Double, Seeing, Blindness, Journey to Portugal, and Small Memories. His works have been translated into nearly fifty languages. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1998. He died in Spain on June 18, 2010.
