Dora Bruder, fifteen years old, Jewish. The school register provides only this description of the date and reason for leaving next to her name: December 14, 1941; student has fled. This novel is the story of her search, which the author undertakes nearly five decades later, in the surviving documents of the German occupation of Paris. Link after link, and finally, it is revealed that after leaving school, she was captured by the Germans and sent to Auschwitz, where the Nazis had devised inhumane measures to exterminate an entire nation. Dora Bruder is the main character of this novel, but the real hero is the atmosphere that arose in Paris after the German occupation, which the author has skillfully recreated here. A time when for many people, the sun held no light, the sky no air, no shelter, no roads leading anywhere. They could be caught anywhere, at any time. Rules were made for them, making them less human among fellow humans. They had to leave at designated times, stay in designated areas, travel on designated buses, and keep their identities visible at all times. As the author continues to investigate what happened to Dora on that icy December night, and where she was, the horrors of this environment become apparent to us. We become cold and numb from within, and suddenly, with a startled look at our present environment...
