Description
In the 1940s, they had to travel from the narrow streets of Kamalia and the rugged terrain of Quetta (now in Pakistan) in undivided India to Amritsar, Agra, and Delhi. These cities were devastated by the pain of Partition. Finally, they settled in Ludhiana, with nothing more than the clothes they were wearing. From there, four of the six Munjal brothers scraped together their business, scraping by. They had no grand dreams of developing a world-class enterprise. Their goal was simply to survive and provide for their families. Hero began with a bicycle parts business and later produced bicycles, mopeds, automotive parts, motorcycles, and scooters. Today, the restructured group is also extensively involved in the service business and infrastructure sectors. In 1986, thirty years after its founding, Hero Cycles became the worlds largest bicycle manufacturer. Over the next fifteen years, Hero Honda, the motorcycle enterprise, also became the worlds largest, and the Hero Group remains strong in both these positions today. This is an authentic Make in India story, overcoming numerous obstaclescomplex red tape, slow economic growth, and later, global competition. It also chronicles the lives and times of the four Munjal brothers, who, living together, engineered a miraculous revolution on two wheels without any formal education or resources. Parallelly, the book also chronicles how an agricultural economy like India, with limited means of transportation, took off on this two-wheeled revolution. While inspired by family values and Indian ethos, the Hero Group companies are modern and innovative in their thinking and best practices. True to their business philosophy, Hero companies are renowned for developing mutually beneficial business relationships. This book delves deeply into the family spirit that has united employees, customers, channel partners, suppliers, and local communities over the past seven decades to create success, well-being, and prosperity for millions. This is a rare story that demonstrates how a principled organization can create extraordinary value for society.
