Hindi Kahani Ka Itihas

This is the first systematic history of Hindi short stories, and certainly the first integrated history of Hindi-Urdu. It is noteworthy that many story writers of this period were simultaneously writing in both Hindi and Urdu. Premchand is prominent among them. Sudarshan, Upendranath Ashk, and others also wrote simultaneously in both Hindi and Urdu. Their Hindi and Urdu works, except for the script, show no significant difference. Linguistically, there is no difference in content and structure. Most notable Urdu stories have been adapted into Hindi or even transliterated into Devanagari. ...Most of the material on Urdu short stories has been taken from Urdu literary histories and critical treatises, and references have been provided where appropriate. Along with Hindi and Urdu, this book also includes short stories from Bhojpuri, Maithili, and Rajasthani. During the period for which this book presents a history of short story literature, there is no systematic account of short story literature written by non-Hindi speakers and Indian expatriates. Therefore, it has not been possible to include this vast, and perhaps valuable, literature in this history. This book discusses or mentions, in more or less detail, approximately 100 short story writers and 3,000 stories from Urdu, Hindi, Maithili, Bhojpuri, and Rajasthani. An alphabetical list of short story writers and short story collections is provided in the index. Additionally, an alphabetical list of short stories that have been popular or notable for any reason is also provided. Hopefully, this will satisfy readers curiosity.
