This book by Acharya Hazari Prasad Dwivedi is based on the lectures he delivered at Vishwa Bharati to introduce Hindi literature to non-Hindi speaking literary scholars. Many passages from the original lectures have been omitted, which were unnecessary for Hindi-speaking literary scholars. The learned author urges that Hindi literature should not be viewed in isolation from the rest of Indian literature. The original book repeatedly discusses Sanskrit, Pali, Prakrit, and Apabhramsha literature. Therefore, a brief introduction to Vedic, Buddhist, and Jain literature has been added to the appendix. In the context of the analysis of Ritikavya, poetic fame and metaphors for female body parts are discussed. Considering it essential for comparing Sanskrit poetry with medieval poetry, Dwivedi has added chapters on these two topics in the appendix. Thus, this book has become both popular and authoritative in introducing Hindi literature.
