Description
Four chapters have been compiled: friend-gain, friend-difference, conflict, and reconciliation. It is called Hitopadesha. On the banks of the Bhagirathi River, there was a city called Pataliputra. A king named Sudarshan ruled there. King Sudarshan was endowed with all the virtues. The king heard two verses from someone. The first verse read, The eye of knowledge is the eye of a human being that dispels all kinds of doubts and allows one to see the past and future. One who lacks the eye of knowledge should be considered blind. The second verse read, Youth, wealth, power, and lack of wisdomif a person possesses even one of these flaws, it destroys him; and what can one say about a person who possesses all four of these flaws? Hearing these, the king remembered his princes. They were not only devoid of knowledge but had also taken to the wrong path. The king began to ponder, What good is a son who is neither learned nor religious? Just as a blind eye only causes pain, so too is the fate of having such a son.
