Description
During the freedom struggle itself, the issue of what would be the status of the so-called untouchable castes in independent India was repeatedly raised. The movements of Phule, Periyar, and Ambedkar highlighted the caste issue, while Gandhis anti-untouchability movement was another dimension of this. When the Constitution was enacted after independence, the reservation system for jobs and in Parliament, designed to ensure adequate representation of Dalits and tribals, was a source of criticism for representatives of dominant castes from the very beginning. Then, in the 1990s, there were even violent protests against the Mandal Commissions recommendations for reservation for backward castes. More recently, when reservations were implemented in 2022, it was described as contrary to the basic spirit of reservation. This book by Satyendra Pratap Singh addresses the caste issue and reservation issues in Indian society not only academically but also from an activists perspective, attempting to understand them in the context of socio-economic reality. Equally useful for general readers and researchers, this book is highly effective in better understanding the issue of reservation in the Hindi region. Born on May 13, 1975, in Gorakhpur, Satyendra P.S. completed his Masters in Political Science from St. Andrews College, Gorakhpur, and earned a degree in Journalism from Banaras Hindu University. Active in the field of journalism for 22 years, Satyendra has been working for Business Standard newspaper for the last 14 years. His book, Mandal Commission: The Biggest Initiative in Nation Building, has been widely discussed.
