Description
The Ganges is a significant river in the Indian subcontinent, traveling 2,525 km from the Himalayas to Bangladesh. Flowing eastward throughout its vast expanse, it turns south near Farakka and bifurcates. In India, the river is known as the Bhagirathi, Alaknanda, Ganga, and Hooghly. The Ganges main stream, the Bhagirathi, originates in the sacred Gangotri glacier. From its source, the Bhagirathi flows west for 35 km before turning south. Its main tributary, the Alaknanda, joins it at Devprayag. From Devprayag, the combined flow of the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi becomes the Ganges. Leaving the mighty Himalayan range near Lakshman Jhula, it enters the plains at the pilgrimage site of Haridwar. This sacred river holds not only cultural and religious significance for Indians, but is also important for various aspects of life.
