Description

Through the medium of a young man named Changdev Patil, Jarila brings to light the complex reality of this pan-Indian land, shaped by the intersection of caste, religion, tradition, culture, and emotions like jealousy, ego, and competition. It highlights an aspect of Indian life that cannot be confined to any one region or place. Changdev feels isolated in this land. He grows weary of the narrow-mindedness around him, but he never harbors lasting hatred for anyone. He gives more than he expects and expects very little in return. For him, the biggest questions arent those of everyone around him. His only desire is to experience the ultimate meaning of his existence. He is a professor at a college in a hilly village where caste politics is the most influential force. Yet, he rises above all this and continues his work, happy. He develops unique relationships with his fellow teachers and the villagers. But then the village transformer burns out, and for six months, the people are plunged back into the dark ages. This external darkness gradually deepens his inner loneliness to the point of panic. His inner urge to remain unattached to anyone or anywhere also keeps him going. The values he upholds while preserving his ordinariness are unclear, but he builds his personality on the basis of that vague, human urge. Jarila is as captivating and complete a read independently as it is a link in a series. This is a significant characteristic.
