Description
The place that Bijak holds among Kabir followers is held by Kabir Granthavali, edited by Shyamsundar Das, in academic circles. Despite all the controversies and disagreements, scholars still turn to Granthavali for an authentic text of Kabir. What if it turns out that while the Kabir collected in Granthavali may be more complete than other collections, the text published here contains numerous errors that not only distort the meaning but also reverse the poets intention? It is not surprising that Professor Purushottam Agarwal, who has been used in numerous editions for nearly a century, noticed this aspect of Granthavali and, driven by his extensive study and extraordinary love for Kabir, undertook to refine it. This edition presents that refined and pure text, which begins with a lengthy introduction. In this introduction, Professor Agarwal has not only shed light on this laborious process of textual revision, but has also summarized the latest insights gleaned from his research on Kabir. Readers are aware that in The Untold Story of Love: Kabirs Poetry and His Times (2009), he used Kabir to identify medieval Indian modernity, which had already emerged in Indian folklore before colonial modernity. In this presentation of Kabir Granthavali, he not only presents Kabirs words in their purest form, but also provides us with the understanding to properly read and understand him by untangling the complexities of the history of Kabir studies.
