Description

Like an ocean in a pot, this book presents a collection of the best and most representative poems from the vast body of Hindi poets, along with detailed analysis. Kabir (1398-1515) is a towering figure in Indian literature. There has never been another poet as forthright as him. His anti-hypocrisy, devotion to God, and dedication to his Guru in his Sakhis (sakhis) earned him such popularity that his name is still remembered even among Hindi and non-Hindi speaking audiences. His spirituality was acquired through self-study, and his courage to refute them is a testament to his life experiences. The courage to say something like Jo ghar phoonke apna (who blew his own house) is what makes Kabir Kabir. This book presents a selection of Kabirs best poetry, drawn from three types of compositions: Sakhi, Shabad, and Ramaini, from Kabirs many collections. These poems reflect Kabirs radiant personality and also a taste of his forthright, frank words. This selection was edited by Dr. Madhav Hada. He has been renowned as a scholar of the Bhakti period. Dr. Hada, who was a professor and head of the Hindi department at Udaipur University, is an expert on Hindi medieval literature and poetry. Currently, Dr. Hada is the editor of the magazine Chetna of the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies, Shimla.
