Description

Kusum Khemanis novel, Lal Batti Ki Amritkanyaen, can be considered a step forward in terms of plot, as it is an area that Hindi writers often shy away from writing about. Nevertheless, there are some notable works in this direction, and this novel is the latest in a series. Although the novel centers on Kolkatas Sonagachi, this red-light lane exists in every city and town, flowing like an underground stream within society. Society considers these women to be poison girls, but in reality, they not only prevent the spread of the filth hidden within society but also purify it. At this point, these poison girls transform into nectar girls. The novels story is a saga of struggle to move from poison to nectar, as the characters are women who have been deprived of nectar and pushed towards poison. The linguistic skill and craftsmanship with which Kusum Khemani depicts the horrifying incidents of daily harassment, humiliation, and murder faced by these women in the novel are a sight to behold. From the first page, the novel unfolds before us like a riveting film. This narrative style is Dr. Kusum Khemanis unique skill, which keeps readers captivated until the end. The novels narrative not only references a helping hand but also the artistic exploration of these fallen womens attempts to rise and recover after falling. After reading novels like Lavanya Devi, Jadiyabai, and Gatha Rambhateri, it can be said that if anyone could have written a novel so full of such qualities, it could only be Kusum Khemanis.
