Description
Madhavi - This third play by renowned author Bhisham Sahni, Madhavi, is based on a story from the Mahabharata. Sage Vishwamitras disciple, Galav, insists on paying guru-dakshina (gift) at the end of his education. Angered by his stubbornness, Vishwamitra demands eight hundred horse-riding horses. Wandering in search of horse-riding horses, Galav finally arrives at the ashram of the generous King Yayati. King Yayati, now retired from his kingdom, is perplexed by Galavs promise. However, he entrusts his only daughter, Madhavi, endowed with divine qualities, to him, stating that wherever any king possesses eight hundred horse-riding horses, he should release Madhavi to the king in exchange for them. It is said that the child born from her womb will become a Chakravarti king. This is where Madhavis story begins. Through a unique and moving sequence of events, the plays principal charactersMadhavi, Galava, Yayati, Vishwamitra, and several kingsplay their respective roles, and within the context of a complex, moving human situation, these characters take on new dimensions. At the center of this drama is Yayatis daughter, Madhavi, who, despite living in an almost ethereal, mythical setting, emerges as profoundly alive, utterly relatable, and captivating.
