Description
The soil itself became the source of destruction, and from that same soil came rebirth. In 1999, a devastating cyclone struck Odisha, the most devastating cyclone ever recorded in the northern Indian Ocean. The seawater crossed the coast, reaching 35 kilometers inland, devastating villages in Jagatsinghpur district. It is estimated that 50,000 people lost their lives. Four days after the cyclone, writer Pratibha Rai went to Jagatsinghpur district. She collected relief supplies and distributed them among the survivors. Pratibha Rai was deeply disturbed by this heartbreaking natural disaster and continued to visit Jagatsinghpur district for four years, carrying out relief work and counseling those who had lost their loved ones. Based on these four years of experience, she wrote this novel about the lives of the people of the coastal region of Jagatsinghpur. Jagatsinghpur was once part of the prosperous Kalinga Empirefrom that historical period to the cyclone that struck, and how the culture, lifestyle, and livelihoods of the area were transformed in this novel. With the cyclone at its center, Magnamati is both a story of this transformation and a saga of indomitable human courage, a desire to live even after losing everything.
