Born and raised in Seattle, he grew up in a family with a rich history of business, politics, and social service. Bill Gates discovered his interest in software at an early age and began programming computers at the age of thirteen. In 1973, Gates enrolled at Harvard University, where he developed BASIC, a programming language for the first microcomputer, at MITS Altair.
