Like many others, I was closely involved in the revolutionary movement to liberate our motherland from the yoke of foreign imperialism. When Gandhiji returned from South Africa in early 1915, I was one of the first political activists to come into close contact with him. I was also closely involved with his first Satyagraha movement, which took place in Champaran (Bihar) against the atrocities of the white indigo planters.I served as General Secretary of the Congress for twelve years during the most crucial and turbulent period of our freedom struggle. I was Congress President the year our country gained independence. My friends believe that my knowledge of the key events and personalities of our national movement will be quite intimate and revealing. Therefore, my memoirs will have some historical significance. Therefore, in what I have written, I have focused less on myself and more on our freedom struggle.I have titled this book My Times: My Era, but I mention me only as much as is necessary. The story of my life also encompasses a large part of the history of the Congress and the freedom struggle. Therefore, this is not an autobiography, but rather a record of these major and important events. In describing them, I have focused less on what I did and more on what I saw and understood at the time.
