Description
It may seem surprising, but its a fact that almost all Mughal emperors, from Babur to Bahadur Shah Zafar, were poets and poets; and they composed poetry not only in Persian and Urdu, but also in Braj Bhasha and Hindi. This book proves that any emperor who found a moment of peace, away from politics and war, not only encouraged poets and writers, but also wrote poems and ghazals, and created an environment around them that allowed the women in their families to compose poetry. Theres written evidence that Baburs daughter, Gulbadan Begum, and granddaughter, Salima Sultana, wrote poetry in Persian. Humayun wasnt a poet himself, but his love for poetry was no less. Akbars love for art and culture is well-known; he also wrote in Persian and Hindi. Akbars Hindi poems are included in Sangit Raagkalpadum. Jahangir, Nur Jahan, and then Aurangzebs daughter Zebunnissa all wrote poetry in either Persian or a mix of Persian and Hindi. It is said that poetry was the language of Shah Jahans court. Questions and answers in the court were conducted in verse. Dara Shikohs Diwan is available, containing his ghazals and rubaiyats. We are all familiar with the poetry of the last Mughal emperor, Zafar. It is noteworthy that he also wrote poems in Hindi, which are also available. Needless to say, this collection, edited by the senior Hindi critic Dr. Manager Pandey, adds a new dimension to the image of the Mughal Empire in India. Through it, we learn that the Mughal emperors not only gave us forts and tombs, but also passed on a great tradition of poetry.
