Description
Few people know how vast the world of filmmaker-storyteller Khwaja Ahmad Abbass pen was. In his seventy-year life, he wrote 70 books and numerous articles in newspapers and magazines. His column, titled The Last Page in English and Azad Kalam in Urdu, appeared every Wednesday in Blitz. And youll be surprised to know that he wrote it continuously for forty years, often with different subjects in both languages. Its said that this is a unique record in the world. What you hold in your hands is a collection of his short stories. All 17 stories in this collection have been compiled by his granddaughter and literary scholar, Zoya Zaidi. Some of these stories are appearing in Hindi for the first time. Dr. Zaidi says that Abbas Sahib was a man who had a purpose in life, a purpose for which he lived. One aim: to bring about change in human society, to awaken its sleeping soul. This is what he pursued throughout his life through his stories, films, and columns. Sympathy for the common man, an unwavering faith in humanity, a deep understanding of womens suffering, and a sharp, artistic disgust with corrupt bureaucracy are the elements evident in these stories. In Dr. Zaidis words, these stories mirror Abbas Sahibs soul. In these stories, you will find the Abbas who wanted to see humanity as a developed and good individual. A special highlight of this book is an interview with Khwaja Ahmad Abbas, conducted by none other than Krishna Chandra.
