Description

In 2010, when the Indian government was intensifying anti-Naxal operations in the countrys Naxal-affected areas, Alpa Shah embarked on a seven-night journey through 250 kilometers of those areas with a guerrilla platoon. As an anthropologist, she wanted to understand why, against the backdrop of the rise of a new India, the countrys poor turned their backs on the worlds largest democracy and showed solidarity with revolutionary ideology. Dressed in a dark green guerrilla uniform, disguised as a man, Alpa was the only woman in the platoon and the only person without a gun. Her journey, fraught with hardship, revealed why people from diverse backgrounds came together to take up arms to change the world; and what led to their subsequent fragmentation. Through years of research, Alpa Shah became so immersed in the everyday lives of tribal communities in Naxalite strongholds that her book, The Thrilling Story of My Past Among the Naxalites, clearly captures that depth and intimacy, unfolding before our eyes like a thriller. This in-depth study and research brings tribal life and their struggles to life. This work offers a reflection of economic growth, growing inequality, displacement, and conflict in contemporary India.
