Description
Dr. Hill observed that people who achieved financial prosperity in life, no matter how much money they had, were often the most unhappy and dissatisfied people in the world.Napoleon Hill rarely used more than one page of notes when delivering his speeches. Many of his notes still exist, but very little of what he actually said remains. It took me several years to find one of my grandfathers printed speeches. Finding this one speech was more than just a breathtaking experience; it was miraculous. The document I found was a transcript of the commencement address he delivered at Salem College (now Salem International University) in 1922. It was published in a local newspaper under the title The Rainbows End. A copy of it was preserved on microfilm in the Salem College Museum. It needed to be enlarged for publication, and the text was so faded that it took more than a day to recover. I had to dictate each word to my wife.Napoleon wrote many times that hardship should be considered a blessing in disguise. In his 1922 commencement speech, Napoleon recounted how many of his business failures proved turning points that opened the way to greater opportunities. He attributes his success after failure to his habit of giving more and better service than he received. This characteristic was a precursor to his two principles of success: learning from hardship and defeat and going the extra mile.Napoleon delivered this speech in 1922 in Salem, West Virginia, not far from his wifes home. Florences family home was in Lumberport. Although he was then the editor and publisher of Napoleon Hills Magazine and successful in every way, he had much to prove to his family. Ten business failures in a dozen years had soured their attitude towards him. This inaugural speech was, therefore, an opportunity for Napoleon to win accolades before his wifes friends and family, and he succeeded. His speaking style captivated the audience. He used his history of setbacks to show how he overcame adversity. This speech was considered one of the greatest of all time in that part of the province. When the speech concluded amid thunderous applause and applause, Napoleon stood triumphantly before his family.
