Description

The play deals with an incident that took place during the rule of the king of Haleri. Marthanda of the neighbouring kingdom troubled Kodvas and indulged in violence, loot and plunder. Ponnappa, a brave warrior, killed Marthanda, protected the people of Kodagu and saved the land. His story and that of his friend, Kaala, a youngster of the Kaapaala community has been portrayed by focusing on their bravery. The play is based on a folk narrative and has mixed the traditions and celebratory observances of the Kodava people in the right proportion, and has given it a special luster.Dr Lalithas attempt in projecting the bravery of Kodavas through songs of their folk tradition has been successful. They are conducive to the context and have come out in a beautiful manner. The songs are melodious. This play has enchanted us by portraying the beautiful landscape of Kodagu and the accomplishments of bravery of its people.Throughout the play,Ponnappas faith in Nature and the divine is projected. In addition, the formation of Ponnappas friendship with Kaala of the Kaapaala community, their mutual friendship that transcends the barriers of caste and sacrifice are heart-warming.The play has twelve scenes which can be called postcard scenes. They combine a historical incident with creative imagination to present an exciting narrative that captivates spectators.
