The work, The Material Culture of Eastern Uttar Pradesh (From the Prehistoric Era to the Post-Mughal Era), is the culmination of a scholars research journey. Based on literary and archaeological sources, he has made a commendable effort to present various aspects of the material culture of present-day eastern Uttar Pradesh, an ancient region of human settlement from the prehistoric era to approximately the eighteenth century CE. This region, comprising Kashi, Kosala, and Vatsa, prominent among the sixteen Mahajanapadas of the pre-Buddhist era, has been a politically and culturally central part of the Indian territory. The ancient history of eastern Uttar Pradesh has been a glorious one. This work is commendable for its conception and presentation. While an attempt has been made to comprehensively present religion, society, state, state ideals, city administration, trade, crafts, organization, and education, covering a long period of ancient, prosperous region like Eastern Uttar Pradesh, on the one hand, the environmental significance of this region, based on its forest wealth, has also been made useful for new scholars. Thus, the author has succeeded in the books composition, thematic presentation, research of sources, and the research-based presentation of various dimensions of material culture. This work is useful and readable for historical and cultural studies.
