Given the increasing use of Hindi, the Hindi-loving intelligentsia was acutely feeling the need for a new and comprehensive dictionary. Even in the available Hindi dictionaries, the lack of newly popular words was felt. Furthermore, due to the official technical terminology, Hindi equivalents of common English words from various branches of knowledge and science were being used in books and magazines, but readers found it difficult to understand their meaning.The present dictionary certainly fulfills these needs, but its most important feature is its etymological aspect. Each entry is followed by a bracketed reference to the words language and etymology. Sometimes, it is useful to provide an example to clarify the meaning of the word. For this purpose, the initial capital and italicized u has been used, and sufficient references to the book, author, etc. have also been provided.A distinctive feature of the Brihat Hindi Shabdkosh (Brihat Hindi Shabdkosh), unlike other dictionaries, is that it provides definitions of various meters (doha, soratha, etc.) along with prior information about the meter within the entry. Adopting the Hindi word vaagbandh for the Arabic word muhavara, a large number of phrases (vaagbandh) have been included in the entries, as needed, after the words meaning, and their meanings have also been clarified. Of the thousands of words coined in various branches of the humanities and science, only popular technical terms have been included in the entries.These linguistic notes, reflecting new insights, are: 1. Imitative words, 2. Particles, 3. Repetition, 4. Hybrid words, and 5. Color-related terminology. Following this is a scientific note: Chemical elements. Included at the end is a literary noteLiterary Surnames. The nine appendices at the end of the dictionary have multiplied the usefulness of this dictionary.Given the ever-increasing widespread use of our national and official language, Hindi, we believe this dictionary will fulfill the need for a new, comprehensive dictionary.
