Indian military pilot Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma is the first Indian to fly in space. Born on January 13, 1949, in Patiala, Rakesh Sharma joined the Indian Air Force as a fighter pilot in 1970. He flew at least 21 times during the 1971 Indo-Pak War. He became the first Indian to travel in space and the 138th astronaut in the world.This space mission lasted approximately eight days, and on April 11, 1984, Rakesh Sharma and his two-member Soviet crew returned to Earth in Kazakhstan. He is also the first Indian to receive the honor of Hero of the Soviet Union. He also received the Ashoka Chakra along with his Russian co-cosmonauts.After retiring from the military, Rakesh Sharma joined Hindustan Aeronautics Limited as Chief Test Pilot in 1987, a position he left in 2001 after becoming Chairman of the Automated Workflow Board.The book presents the thrilling story of Indias pride Wing Commander Rakesh Sharmas transformation from a pilot to an astronaut, which will inspire and pave the way for the youth to pursue a career in this field.
