Description
Kaikeyi generally means princess of the Kekaya country. Accordingly, in the Ramayana, Sunanda, the wife of Sarvabhauma and the mother of Jayatsen, is called Kaikeyi. However, in the traditional and most popular form, Kaikeyi is the daughter of King Aswapati and Shubhalaksana of the Kekaya country, and the younger but most beloved wife of King Dasharatha of Kaushalya. Bharata was born from her womb. When King Dasharatha went to aid the gods in the Devadanav war, Kaikeyi accompanied him. During the battle, the axle of Dasharathas chariot broke. Kaikeyi secured it by placing her hand on the axle, keeping Dasharatha from breaking. When the war ended, Dasharatha learned of this, and was delighted, he asked Kaikeyi to ask for two boons. Kaikeyi kept them for her to ask for at an appropriate time. Accordingly, Rama went to the forest, but Bharata refused to accept the kingdom. He rebuked his mother and went to the forest to bring Rama back. Kaikeyi also accompanied him at that time. This is a beautiful novelistic account of Kaikeyis life.
