Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) means a disciplined group of people who voluntarily serve the nation. That is why volunteers are the first and foremost in any crisis, whether at the countrys borders or within the country.The RSSs most significant characteristic is its methodology. This is also the reason for its growth. This is what distinguishes it from other organizations and institutions. Other organizations work through protests, annual festivals, religious gatherings, etc.; but the core of the RSSs functioning is the daily shakha (branch) and the programs held there.A volunteer is identified by his or her nationalistic ideology and good conduct, not by any distinctive attire or external symbol. The RSS is not an organization of Hindu society, but an organization of Hindu society. Therefore, volunteers live in society like everyone else.A major characteristic of the RSSs methodology is its flexibility. It has undergone numerous changes according to time, place, and environment. Initially, the emphasis was on military parades, military uniforms, and weapons training; but then sports, yoga, and martial arts were introduced. The uniform has also changed several times.
