Description
In 2016, a series of talks between A.S. Dulat and Durrani sought to find common ground. One was the former head of RAW, Indias external intelligence agency, and the other was the head of its Pakistani counterpart, the ISI. Since the two could not meet in their respective countries, the talks, moderated by journalist Aditya Sinha, took place in cities like Istanbul, Bangkok, and Kathmandu. The discussions covered long-standing conflict points that have plagued South Asia, resulting in loss of life and property. It was a deep exploration of subcontinental politics as seen through the lens of the two spy chiefs. The discussions covered topics such as Kashmir and missed opportunities for peace, Hafiz Saeed and 26/11, Kulbhushan Jadhav, the surgical strikes, the Osama bin Laden negotiations, the influence of the US and Russia on India-Pakistan relations, and how terrorism thwarts efforts at dialogue between the two Asian countries. When this conversation first began, General Durrani laughed and said no one would believe it, even if it were fiction. Amid strained relations, the conversation between the former heads of two intelligence agenciesthe first of its kindmay provide answers to some questions.
