Description

Shivanand Tiwari is a leader in the tradition of Lohia, JP, Kishan Patnaik, Ramanand Tiwari, and Karpoori Thakur. Few people in todays politics have had a political career as long as his. He has been involved in non-Congress, non-BJP politics and has been active since before 1965. Known as Baba, Shivanand ji possesses perhaps the greatest treasure of experiences, anecdotes, and firsthand accounts. He has been active since the Quit India Movement began in the late 1960s and was among the leaders of the JP Movement in 1974. He worked alongside Kishan Patnaik in the Lohia Vichar Manch and Samata Sangthan, and despite his separation from them, he remained true to their ideological and practical principles. These speeches and comments reflect the scope and direction of his thinking. It is clear that globalization and communal politics are at the center of his concerns. These speeches by Shivanand ji include farmer suicides, weaver starvation and suicide, the difficulties posed by the patent regime and its legal battles, the plight of workers in the unorganized sector, criticism of US President George Bushs fallacy that inflation is caused by increasing food for the poor, and comments on farmers abandoning farming. He blames the New Economic Policies for much of this. This criticism was correct, and this is the significance of the book, as these policies were not criticized in Parliament anywhere during the entire period of globalization.
