A trip to Kashi means understanding Kashi, delving deeper into it, and immersing ones own essence in the ocean of its familiarity. So, one day, some Banarasi pilgrims decided on their own. To understand the individual, society, religion, culture, and the inexplicable mysteries of Kashi, why not undertake the Panchakroshi Yatra? Panchakroshi means the circumambulation of Kashis mythical boundaries. So, the pilgrims embarked on this journey from the periphery to the center. The journey was unique. In this journey, we discovered ourselves, understood the world, and viewed Kashis great heritage with reverence and wonder. We were enriched within ourselves. We enriched our lives. In this increasingly individualistic world, we sought a haven of collectivity. We considered some alternatives. We made some resolutions. We launched a campaign to rebuild the crumbling monuments of the past. The fruits of this journey fertilized the soil of our consciousness. When the journey was complete, Thalu decided, Why not pass on the experiences and accounts of this journey to humanity? Then, the plan for this book was hastily conceived. The experiences recorded in the pages of his mind during the journey, Thalu transferred them from the reeds of history to the paper of the present, and this book became the book. During the Panchakroshi Yatra, we sought Kashi in the same way that Vasco da Gama, some five hundred years ago, journeyed through the dusty alleys of Portuguese history, searching for India, reached the shores of Calicut. Just as he yearned to understand the mysterious India, we were similarly yearning to know and understand Kashi. There was also a significant dividing difference. Vasco da Gama came for profit, while we left profit behind. Home, family, business, all the worries of material life...everything. We didnt want to achieve anything for our material lives. We simply wanted to be part of the eternal passion to know and understand Kashi. We wanted to fill our lives with the satisfaction of having given some of it to Kashi, and only Kashi. We understood Kashi. We knew Kashi. We connected to a great legacy; we became part of a great legacy.
